Home Sick

I was just bragging to someone the other day about how I had only used 6 hours of sick leave this year, and that was to take care of a sick Bean. So, naturally, after having done that, I am now home sick myself. I have been fighting a cold for the past few weeks and it is now taking the familiar form of a recurring sinus infection I tend to get around this time every year. Sigh . . . the girls rather reluctantly went off with Dad to school this morning, so I am hoping a little rest will do the trick and that stronger medicine than Dayquil will NOT be called for.

Things that are popular in the MooBean household this month:

  • Michael Phelps! The girls were allowed to stay up (REALLY) late to watch him race, and now they talk about him all the time. The Moo has even developed a Phelpsian butterfly stroke, which looks like an excellent imitation to my untrained eye!
  • Imitation. The most oft repeated phrase by the Moo lately is "stop copying me!" Naturally this is directed at the Bean, who tends to interpret it more as a rallying cry than the veiled threat it actually represents. Thus far, they have not come to blows, but I see the distinct potential for our first real donnybrook in the near future.
  • ART! This is a great development: the girls would rather draw than watch Spongebob. The Moo has progressed in her artistic abilities to a point where Dad swears she draws better than he does, and the Bean is starting to add some amazing detail to her drawings (her people have pupils in their eyes, noses, ears, and hair now -- still no bodies, but it is very cute to see her drawings of faces with arms and legs sticking out of them). Her preferred subject matter for her drawings is "sea slugs."
  • Snuggles, a trend created by Dad and greatly encouraged by Mom. I am trying to make the most of the girls' willingness to snuggle as the writing is on the wall as far as pulling away from Mom and Dad goes. The Moo already wipes off all my kisses!!

The other big thing in our house right now is KINDERGARTEN. It has been a little a low key up to this point, as the Moo will be going back to LCDS so she will not be starting a new school, but it is starting to hit us that this is a huge milestone and a really big deal! We are glad that Grandma L and Grandpa D will be here to help share her last week of summer before she embarks on her primary school career. She will be in Mrs. Corso's Kindergarten class, and we already know that four of her friends from last year will be in the class of 10 with her. There is also a full time aid in the classroom, so I am confident the Moo will get all of the individualized attention she needs to make the most of this year. Yeah Moo! We are very proud of what a big girl you have become, and how excited you are about learning!!

Finally, an update on Grandma D and her broken foot: Grandma D called on Monday and said that she had had a new Xray taken, and her foot is healing nicely. Still no need for a cast or surgery so that is all good news! She may even be able to go back to wearing regular shoes next week. Way to go Grandma!
